Hey everyone.. Sorry for not being around. Keeping it short. I still don’t have
propper internet and I can’t be arsed sitting here in the computer room when I can be somewhere else and paint and draw.
Things are going well here, I’m still having my ups and downs, most recently though, a huge up. For the first time in many years I’ve been able to tackle work gradually by taking small steps everyday.
An example would be, if I have to write an essay.. usually, for the past recent 5 years, I’d wait until the last day and then sit and write som half-assed piece of work and turn it in. Now I’ve been able to write for like 30-40 minutes every day. It’s a new sensation for me.. a lot of personal growth going on here.
I’m trying to keep my studies up as well, doing 4 pages a day. 2 pages are Anatomy studies from varied sources. A friend of mine got tons of anatomy books of great guys I didn’t know of such as Peck and Sheppard.
These are the books:
Peck -
Sheppard -
If you want to study more than bridgman and loomis I recommend checking out those guys!
My two other studies are:
1 page of value studies.. doing gradients and shading cubes (Following a Gnomon Workshop DVD series going into how to render matte surfaces – GOOD as hell if you ask me!)
- check it out here - -

And the last page is a render study, could be of an old master or some other awesome artist or frome life, the idea is to explore different kinds of rendering with pencil as well as how values work.

Digitally I’m starting to understand how to paint. “Sculpting” with value and varying edges with soft and hard brushes.. It’s like.. there are so many loose threads I’m touching upon I don’t really know where to start or what to do. Hopefully, as long as I keep my mind aware and explore these areas I’ll somehow begint to tie them together.

Now it sounds like I’m really productive, but nah, I’m not – I’ve been fighting with many downs.. I’m in a very self reflective situation right now and it can be heavy some times. It’s a part of life though and it’s wonderful to be alive and experience the whole show.. can’t always have fun and be happy

Lastly.. CgHub has a small pokemon challenge going on. I couldn’t resist. Here's the image

Schmid Landscape study

Dropping a quick landscape study from Richard Schmid's book "Alla Prima" .. That guy is a golden god of painting. Get that book NOW
- Check out his Website -

The purpose of this study was to understand how few hues you really need to get the illusion of different colors... there's like 2-3 hues in this piece, broken down into a variety of values and saturations.
Had a lot of fun exploring shapes and edges. Tried to get an oily painterly feel to the piece using smudge tool and different brushes

Laters :)

ArtOrder Lovecraft Challenge

Hey, just dropping a quick note and artwork. The ArtOrder challenge is due today and I just "finished" my piece.

They were not any birds or bats known elsewhere on earth or in dreamland, for they were larger than elephants and had heads like a horse's. Carter knew that they must be the shantak-birds of ill rumour, and wondered no more what evil guardians and nameless sentinels made men avoid the boreal rock desert.

—H. P. Lovecraft, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

I had great fun working on it and explored some different new approaches. Running short of time right now so I'll drop some wip's in a later post sharing some thoughts.

Take care for now

No internet - Happily devouring art

Hey, it's been a while. I don't have internet here at school so haven't been able to update really.

Nevertheless everything is fine! lack of internet gives me a lot of spare time. Been doing a lot of drawing and painting these days (I've almost filled 2 sketchbooks since school start! ) Thought I'd drop some work in progress on things I've been working on.

First off, an illustration based on autumn. To me, this is the most beautiful time of the year. When ever I see the falling leaves being carried away by the win I see a small dragon playing around with them. I wanted to paint that dragon and capture the warmth and joy that can be found all around even though the nights are longer and the days are colder. Still working on this piece.

Second off, a quick dragon concept for fun.. haven't done a 'traditional' dragon in a long time so thought it was about time. Wanted to show it at this stage before rendering it. Also did some fooling around with colours imitating the style of - Kekai Kotaki - one of my favourite artists. His work is beyond this world!

Thirdly, the ArtOrder blog has another challenge running. I am ashamed to have missed the deadline of the last one.. If I keep messing up deadlines I'll never be able to work as a freelance artist hehe.. so I have to finish this one.
The challenge is about painting a creature based on the books by H.P Lovecraft. I've decided to give the creature 'Shantak' a shot. It's a huge dragonbirdmonster thing. Think it'll turn out pretty cool, got some insane ideas for this one.

Also adding some digital still life's I've been doing these days.. to sum things up, I fucking love drawing!

take care, hope to be more frequent once I get internet

LogMonster concept challenge

Hey, long time no see. Just posting a quick update, dropping a work in progress. There is a challenge going on over att the ArtOrder blog - Check it out here -

The challenge is to design a 'log monster' - I've been doing some thumbnails and rendering out the one's I like the most in gray. I'm going to let them inspire me a while longer before deciding on which one to do a final colour concept of. Having great fun!

There is a chance to win some great art books, worth $40. Would be really cool to get my hands on a good anatomy book, would help my current studies a lot! Hoping for the best :)

Take care for now ~ M

Here are some spare time doodles from my sketchbook. I have some work over at the school I need to photograph as well. I've been inspired by Alphonse Mucha a lot lately.

would like to share my thoughts about school at a later time. As it is now though, think of it as a modernist art school in general with little to no emphasis on developing technical skill.. quite the challenge.
