Schmid Landscape study

Dropping a quick landscape study from Richard Schmid's book "Alla Prima" .. That guy is a golden god of painting. Get that book NOW
- Check out his Website -

The purpose of this study was to understand how few hues you really need to get the illusion of different colors... there's like 2-3 hues in this piece, broken down into a variety of values and saturations.
Had a lot of fun exploring shapes and edges. Tried to get an oily painterly feel to the piece using smudge tool and different brushes

Laters :)

  3. Hey, when u do studies from books like the Schmidt one, do u basically prop the book up next to your workspace and kind of eyeball the painting and draw it just like you would if you were painting from life?
Is this a good way to improve on fundamental painting skills? I do mostly work from my imagination, but am looking for ways to improve overall. I've got one of schmidts books but never thought to paint from but am not sure how i should go about doing so.
    Anyway, very nice work. cheers!
